Who issues the vaccination certificate and who pays the costs?

The vaccination card is usually handed out at the first check-up for infants. The cost of the vaccination card is covered by statutory and private health insurance companies.

What is documented in the vaccination record?

The vaccination card documents all standard vaccinations for children, adolescents and adults, international certificates such as the yellow fever vaccination, influenza vaccinations, indication and travel vaccinations as well as the results of tuberculin tests and antibody titer determinations. Passive immunizations are also documented.

Legal requirements for documentation

According to § 22 of the Infection Protection Act, certain information must be included in the vaccination card for each vaccination: Date, name and batch number of the vaccine, name of the disease being vaccinated against and information about the person receiving the vaccination.

What happens if I lose my vaccination card?

In the event of loss, the information can be reconstructed from medical records. New vaccination documents can be issued by doctors who can add previous vaccinations.

Digital vaccination certificate

In Germany, there are efforts to introduce an electronic vaccination card. This would be part of the electronic patient file and would prevent the loss of vaccination data through digitization.

Differentiation from proof of vaccination

Proof of vaccination is a more general term for any document or form of record that confirms that a person has received a particular vaccination.

This can be a formal document such as a vaccination certificate, but also a simpler receipt or digital record, such as a digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate. A vaccination certificate is often issued for specific purposes, such as proof of COVID-19 vaccinations for travel, access to venues or for certain employment requirements.

In summary, the vaccination record is a more comprehensive, often lifelong document, while a vaccination certificate can be any kind of record or confirmation that proves a specific vaccination.
