Social security number Terminology and background
The social security number has several names and is also known as the social security number or pension insurance number, for example.
Your employer needs this in order to deduct social security contributions (health, long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance) from your salary. You must therefore always present it when you start a new job. This number does not change and remains the same for every employee. The social security number can be found on the insurance number certificate (social security card) and is required, for example, for every job as proof of the insurance number issued or when applying for a social benefit (e.g. unemployment benefit).

Where can I find my social security number?
You can find your social security number in two places. In both cases it is the same number, just printed on different documents. You can find the social security number on the following documents:
- Payroll accounting
- Proof of insurance number or social security card

What can I do if I don't have a social security number?
If you can't find your social security number, that's not a problem. There is a quick solution so that your employer can still hire you.
Instead of your social security number, you can enter the following personal data:
- Name
- Maiden name (if different from surname)
- Place of birth
- Date of birth
- Gender (key)
- Nationality (key)
Your employer can use this information to determine your social security number.
