IBAN background
The IBAN, or International Bank Account Number, is a standardized international bank account number that is used worldwide for current accounts. The IBAN is used for fast and secure processing of transfers and payments, both nationally and internationally.
How does an IBAN look like?
In Germany, IBANs are 22 characters long, starting with the country code DE. The first two digits are check digits, followed by the bank code and the account number.

There are more than 70 countries in which the IBAN is the standard. However, in exceptional cases, such as the USA, Canada and Australia, a different account number is used. For bank transfers, the IBAN is checked by the banks and, if validated successfully, the payment is made within a few minutes. If the IBAN is incorrect or non-existent, the payment will fail.
Where can I find my IBAN?
You can find your IBAN in different ways. Here are some solutions on how to get your IBAN quickly.
- Online banking: If you use online banking, you can log in to your account and find the IBAN in the account details or account information section.

- Bank card: In some cases, you can also find your IBAN on your bank card. This is shown either on the front or back.

- Bank statement: The IBAN is usually noted on your bank statement. Look for a line that says "IBAN". There you will find your personal IBAN.

- Bank documents: Look in the documents you received from your bank, such as welcome letters or account opening documents. The IBAN should be listed there.
