The police clearance certificate

Simple police clearance certificate

The police clearance certificate is an official document issued by the German authorities. It serves as proof of the presence or absence of entries in the Federal Central Criminal Register regarding a person. The document is important for various legal and administrative processes, such as when applying for certain jobs, applying for licenses or in legal proceedings.

Contents of the police clearance certificate:

  • An excerpt from the Federal Central Criminal Register, in which legally binding decisions by courts and administrative authorities concerning a person are registered.
  • Usually contains criminal convictions and decisions by administrative authorities (e.g. on the Weapons Act or on professional bans).
  • Not included are, for example, juvenile sentences suspended on probation, sentences of less than 90 daily rates or 3 months' imprisonment (if no other sentences are entered), and first-time convictions of drug-dependent offenders where the sentence was suspended on probation for successful therapy.

Extended police clearance certificate

The extended police clearance certificate is a special form of clearance certificate that contains additional information. It was introduced in 2010 to provide an improved security check for people who work with children and young people on a professional or voluntary basis. This document is of particular importance in professions and voluntary positions that require a high level of trustworthiness and safety when dealing with minors.

Contents of the extended police clearance certificate:

  • Introduced in 2010, primarily for people who work in a professional, voluntary or similar capacity with children or young people.
  • In addition to the entries noted in the normal certificate of good conduct, it also contains minor convictions and those that no longer appear in the normal certificate of good conduct due to expiry of the time limit.
  • Includes convictions that are particularly relevant to the protection of children and minors, especially convictions for sexual offenses.
  • Is often requested by employers or corresponding organizations in the field of child and youth protection.

In summary, these two types of certificates of good conduct provide an important basis for assessing the integrity and trustworthiness of individuals in various professional and social contexts. The extended certificate of good conduct offers a deeper insight, especially in areas that concern the protection of children and young people.
